Steve Hawkins - Compere and MC
Steve Hawkins has been in Radio and the Media since 1987 where he started out as night time announcer at Radio 2MO Gunnedah and over the years has worked in a number of radio stations including 2TM, 2RE, 2GF and where he is based today at Radio TAB in Brisbane.
Apart from being a music announcer early in his career, Steve has always been a sports presenter (three-time RAWARD winner for Rugby league/Sports broadcasting) and currently broadcasts races and sport in Brisbane. A television host and newspaper columnist, Steve has also sold radio advertising with great success since 1994 and currently runs his own media business with his wife Kate – Hawkins Media Solutions.
“Radio interviews have always been a favourite of mine but being on the stage face to face with some of the most admired people worldwide is a great buzz”. Hawkins said.
“I look back and think of some of the legends I have had in the radio studio over the past 22 years live including Bobby Limb (my first interview), Fred Hollows (the most fascinating man I have ever met), James Blundell (one of his first interviews ever and all time favourite), Tommy Emmanuel (he played the guitar live in the studio for nearly half an hour – a surreal experience), John Williamson (still a favourite), Angry Anderson (a real man’s man), former Prime Minister John Howard (enjoyable) cricketer Mark Taylor, musicians Slim Dusty, Johnny Diesel and Jimmy Barnes and so many more. And that’s just in the radio studio”. He added
“There’s something about being live on stage though, the faces in the crowd make it unique”.
Steve has compered many and varied functions since 18 years of age and is available for MC and Compere work specialising in sporting functions with lounge chair type interviews and conferences. The list of celebrities Hawkins has come face to face with include AFL Western Bulldogs star Jason Akermanis and Brisbane Lion Michael Voss, Rugby League big names Ben Ikin, Darren Lockyer , Gordon Tallis and Alfie Langer, also former legendary administrator Ken Arthurson, outstanding Rugby Union Coach John Connelly, Champion swimmer “Superfish” Sam Riley and one of the all time great Australian Golfers Peter Senior. Former champion cricketers Steve Waugh, Ian Healey, Doug Walters and Max Walker, Jockeys Darren Beadman, Mick Dittman and Miracle Mal Johnston, Hall Of Fame horse trainers John Hawkes and Bart Cummings and also the late great Dr Fred Hollows and so many more.
Hawkins specialises in the one on one lounge chair interviews which gives the right platform for a special result. I’m a self-confessed Michael Parkinson groupie and admire his style.
